Help Support the Learning Resource Centre
Come to Our Book Fair – Wednesday, October 18, 2017!
At Macdonald Drive Elementary, we believe that children benefit immeasurably from frequent access to quality literature, both fiction and non-fiction. The Learning Resource Centre aims to provide a rich and diverse collection of children’s reading material to be used by teachers to supplement and enhance the curriculum subject areas, and independently by students to provide moments of quiet pleasure in their busy day.
The other major purpose of this collection is to develop information literacy skills and teaching an overall framework for problem solving skills. These essential life skills, which are drawn directly from curriculum guide books, include the students’ ability to locate, access, analyze, synthesize and present information, and to be able to evaluate the effectiveness of both the research process and the final product.
Students must develop these proficiencies in both print, non-print, electronic and our collections must reflect the multiple formats available today.
This year, the Macdonald Drive Book Fair will be sponsored by Scholastic Book Fairs. A flyer with a selection of titles from Scholastic Books offered at the fair has been sent home. Please note that while a few titles may not be available for purchase at our fair, all titles are available to order.
On Tuesday, October 17, students will have an opportunity to VIEW the selection of books.
On Wednesday, October 18, students will attend the fair during their scheduled class visit to purchase books. Parents are welcome to accompany their children during their scheduled time as follows:

Donate A Book
The donate a book project has been very successful, resulting in many books being offered to our Learning Resource Centre and classrooms. A family who wishes to purchase a new book will have a bookplate with the donor name(s) affixed inside of the book. There will be book wish lists available for viewing from each classroom teacher to help in book selection.
Door Prize
All students of Macdonald Drive Elementary will be entered in a draw to win $25 in books, plus their classroom will also win $25 in books! They do not need to bring in any ballot.
Volunteers
We will require a large number of volunteers during the Book Fair in order to help make it be a success! Volunteer opportunities include: working on cash tables, the Donate-A-Book table, to stamp and package purchases, and to keep the display area tidy. If you are available on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 please detach and complete the form that was sent home and return it to the school by Wednesday, October 11, 2017 or email Ms. Higdon - kristenhigdon@nlesd.ca
If you are not available to volunteer at the Book Fair but interested in volunteering in the school’s learning resource centre please contact Ms. Higdon or return the form indicating your availability in the “additional comments” box.
We hope that you will take the opportunity to support the Learning Resource Centre!
